Gum Grafting

Example of a Connective Tissue Graft

When recession of the gingiva occurs, the body loses a natural defense against both bacterial penetration and trauma. When gum recession is a problem, gum reconstruction using grafting techniques is an option. Recession often results in root sensitivity to hot and cold as well as an unsightly appearance of the gum and tooth. The exposed root surface is softer than enamel, leading possibly to root caries and root gouging.

Free Gingival Grafts

Another way to treat gum recession are free gingival grafts. As the example shows the surgical result is a firm tissue patch, which can maintain a lighter color, and thereby a patch like appearance.
